On September 11, 2023, our friend Al Acerra, a 35-year police veteran with the Monmouth University Police Department, underwent surgery for OPLL, a condition that compresses the spinal cord and causes serious neurological issues. Sadly, complications from surgery left Al paralyzed from the neck down.
More than two years later, Al has regained some movement and continues to work tirelessly toward recovery. He is currently receiving physical therapy at Project Walk in Mt. Laurel, New Jersey, a specialized paralysis recovery center that is an excellent fit for his needs.
Project Walk does not accept insurance, leaving Al responsible for therapy costs of $250–$300 per session, with multiple sessions recommended each week. Despite the expense, Al has made tremendous progress—he can now use his arms and hands and has shown improvement in his legs and torso.
Our goal is to raise $35,000 to help cover over a year of rehabilitation and ease this financial burden. Any support will help Al continue his recovery journey and focus on healing.
